Police Scotland and NHS Scotland issued a joint alert on Monday 31st January 2022 regarding black or grey "Xanax" tablets that have been found in circulation in both Tayside and the Borders. "Xanax" is a branded form of Alprazolam that is used to treat anxiety and panic disorders, producing a calming effect on the brain and central nervous system.

However, overuse of this drug can be addictive and an overdose can lead rapidly to death. It is particularly dangerous when taken with alcohol or other drugs. Using such tablets without medical supervision and prescription can result in symptoms ranging from drowsiness to severe breathing problems, leading to death.

This alert is, therefore, being circulated to communities throughout Scotland with the request that people be aware of the dangers posed by these tablets which criminals may be attempting to sell in different places.
